覺苑的創辦人 Meiki 清楚記得，最初萌生創立覺苑的念頭，源於一次在南丫島的經歷。那天，她看到路旁擺放著一個三層書架，便立刻好奇地走上前去。她選了兩本書，正巧賣書的先生需要暫時離開換錢，Meiki 便替他看守了一會。那時，她坐在路邊的石級上，手捧著書，被暖暖的陽光擁抱著，感覺是那麼的幸福而簡單。就是這樣一個平凡的午後，點燃了她最初的夢想——創造一個不需太多，只是簡簡單單的空間。

如果用三個詞來形容覺苑，它們會是「日常」、「旅程」和「靜土」。Meiki 相信，在日常生活的體驗當中，處處皆是旅程；而真正的靜土，並不在他方，它自在地存在於每個人的心中。覺苑正是希望成為這樣一個空間，讓大家在日常中感受旅程，並找到內心的寧靜。

在創業初期，Meiki 曾面臨夏日日曬雨淋的嚴峻考驗。她記得有幾年，每當感覺到快要下雨時，便會像「走鬼」一樣，趕著盡可能地覆蓋所有書籍，狂風中狼狽地抓緊書櫃及門，然後大雨便猛烈落下。然而，她也因此領悟到「下雨便不開了」的自由，她學會了「自己可選擇開與不開」，更重要的是「順自然而行」。這種隨性而堅韌的態度，讓她堅持了下來。

在覺苑的營運中，Meiki 遇到了許多令人印象深刻的客人，許多人甚至發展成了朋友，帶來了許多神奇的連結。其中一次，一位旅客在她的本子上用法文寫下：「美由自本身」，提醒她美來自內在。另一次，一位鄰居提醒她：「只要從心真實地表達便可了，無論對方是什麼人，也是人類而已。」這些交流讓她更加懂得去欣賞真實，並珍視人與人之間的連結。

歲月的沉澱：豐盈與通透的成長

如果能對十年前的自己說一句話，Meiki 會說：「你的經歷都是令你變得更豐盈/通透啊～」這句話充滿了智慧與溫柔，肯定了過去所有的經歷，無論好壞，都成就了現在更為豐盈與明澈的自己。

A Message from the founder

Meiki, the founder of Gok Yuen, clearly remembers the initial spark for creating her brand. It came from an experience on Lamma Island. One day, she saw a three-tiered bookshelf by the roadside and immediately, curious, went to look. She picked two books, and when the bookseller had to briefly step away to get change, Meiki offered to watch the stand for him. Sitting on the stone steps by the road, holding her books and embraced by the warm sun, she felt a profound sense of simple happiness. It was this ordinary afternoon that ignited her initial dream – to create a space that didn't need much, just something simple and straightforward.

If three words were to describe Gok Yuen, they would be "Daily Life," "Journey," and "Sanctuary." Meiki believes that within the experiences of daily life, every moment is a journey; and a true sanctuary is not elsewhere, but exists freely within each person's heart. Gok Yuen aims to be such a space, allowing everyone to experience their journey in daily life and find inner peace.

In the early stages of her venture, Meiki faced the severe challenge of summer sun and rain. She recalls for several years, whenever she sensed rain was coming, she would rush like a "ghost on the run," frantically covering as many books as possible, clutching desperately onto bookshelves and doors amidst strong winds, before the heavy rain poured down. However, it was through this that she came to understand the freedom of "not opening when it rains." She learned that she "could choose whether to open or not," and more importantly, to "follow nature's course." This casual yet resilient attitude helped her persevere.

In the daily operations of Gok Yuen, Meiki encounters various people and things every day, which are very unique experiences for her. Through the resonance in books and the consciousness emanating from the space itself, these serendipitous connections make her deeply feel: "This is what I want to do."

The Vitality of Local Creations: The Beauty and Attitude of Being True to Oneself 

Meiki believes that "local creations" in this city are a great test of survival ability. However, they also bring a variety of unique choices and experiences to this land. She believes that every brand that can touch people's hearts or gain support possesses its unique beauty or attitude, which far transcends the product itself. She feels that local creators are working hard to do what they love, and this passion is full of vitality.

The Magic of Frequency Resonance: The Unique Charm of Each Work

For Meiki, it's hard to say which book or consigned work is "most" loved by customers. She believes that every book and consigned item created by friends has its unique appeal. They can move people only through the "frequency resonance" generated between the person and the object at that moment.

Meiki has a small detail she is very particular about, even if customers may not particularly notice it, but she believes it is indispensable – that is, the preparation work for each opening. She meticulously keeps the space clean and bright, and occasionally changes the position of books or decorations to keep the entire space fresh and new. This dedication to detail creates Gok Yuen's unique atmosphere.

When inspiration runs dry, Meiki chooses to pay attention to her current feelings and observe the inner and outer aspects of daily life. She also tries to do familiar things in unfamiliar ways, such as taking a different route, learning a new skill, or having fun with friends. These daily explorations help her rekindle her creative passion.

Gok Yuen's Style: The Freedom of "Not Wanting to Be Defined"  

If Gok Yuen were a sentence, it would be: "I don't want to be defined." This sentence accurately describes Gok Yuen's style – it is not limited by frameworks and is full of possibilities for freedom and change.

Magical Connections: Beauty from Within, Authentic Expression  

In the operations of Gok Yuen, Meiki has met many impressive customers, and many have even become friends, bringing many magical connections. One time, a traveler wrote in French on her notebook: "La beauté vient de soi" (Beauty comes from oneself), reminding her that beauty comes from within. Another time, a neighbor reminded her: "Just express yourself authentically from the heart, no matter who the other person is, they are just human." These exchanges made her appreciate authenticity more and cherish human connections.

If she could say one thing to her ten-year-old self, Meiki would say: "Your experiences are all making you more abundant and transparent" This sentence is full of wisdom and tenderness, affirming that all past experiences, good or bad, have contributed to her present, more abundant and clear self.
