A Message from the founder
On an ordinary day in 2008, Cynthia, the founder of PPO Library, suddenly realized that piles of books had begun "adversely possessing" every corner of her home—from the bedroom to the living and dining rooms, and even the kitchen wasn't spared! Although her equally book-loving daughter didn't say much, this out-of-control situation sparked an idea in Cynthia to find a good home for these idle second-hand books.
At the time, the way non-profit organizations handled second-hand books couldn't fully meet Cynthia's expectations. She thought, "Why not do it myself!" She hoped to allow those still very new second-hand books to circulate back into the community more quickly and nurture more book lovers. Just like that, driven by a moment of "foolish impulse," Cynthia, along with two university classmates and a friend, co-founded the grassroots charitable organization "Read-Cycling" in 2009. Later, in response to community needs, they opened the community bookstore "PPO Library."Cynthia always had many things she wanted to do and many practical matters to handle. To be honest, she never had a moment to think about "giving up." In the blink of an eye, it's already 2025. For her, the word "persistence" feels a bit heavy. Over the years, what she's thought about more is how to ensure this warm space "survives."
Brand Story
A Kind of Old Friend: Gentle Encounters Between Books and Readers
PPO Library's collection comes from the donations of book lovers who, for various reasons, could not keep them by their side. These books were once "a kind of old friend" at some point in their lives, and now, in PPO Library, they await a gentle encounter with new readers.
See You in the Future: Infinite Possibilities Opened by Books
While exploring PPO Library, readers might unexpectedly encounter books they never imagined. These chance meetings might broaden their horizons, allowing them to see a different "future self," full of infinite possibilities.
Walking with You: The Company of Books and Lion Rock
PPO Library hopes that the books within the store and the view of Lion Rock outside the window will become cherished memories for visiting friends in the future, providing them with a warm companionship throughout every journey of their lives.
Heartwarming Moment: "This is What I Want to Do"
A few years ago, a book lover who was about to leave Hong Kong wanted to donate his cherished books to others. After careful consideration, he chose "read-cycling." Both he and his father loved literature, history, philosophy, and art. He personally brought hundreds of Chinese and English books, all like new, to PPO Library. Most were hardcovers, and some were even rare. He said at the time that as long as children were willing to pick up and read even one of them, he would be satisfied. At that moment, Cynthia deeply felt that this was what she wanted to do—to allow the life of books to continue, and for knowledge and love to flow within the community.
Encountering Warmth in City Corners: The Radiance of Handicrafts and Local Creations
In the past, Cynthia was more familiar with local creations in literature, film, television, and music. In recent years, due to operating a pop-up store in Lok Fu, she had the opportunity to meet artisans from various fields, whose skills and creativity greatly impressed her. She believes that many wonderful things have always existed in various corners of this city, and when the time is right, they will serendipitously appear.
Unique Treasures: Donations from Book Lovers
At PPO Library, the most beloved "products" are the good books donated by book lovers. These books have been opened by different readers in different times and spaces, so even if there are two identical books in the store, they become unique due to their own distinct "experiences."
Perseverance Under Lion Rock: Window View and Spiritual Comfort
No matter how the installations and books in PPO Library are moved, Cynthia always insists on not obstructing the view of Lion Rock outside the window. For her, this is not just a small detail, but a hope that Lion Rock and the books in the store will become a frequently recalled sight for visitors in the future, accompanying them throughout their life journeys.
Inspiration in Laughter: Rekindling Creative Passion
When inspiration runs dry, Cynthia shares internet memes or "silly jokes" with core members or close volunteer friends. These lighthearted and pleasant exchanges often rekindle her creative passion and renewed enthusiasm for serving the community.
The Brand's Melody: A March of Dreams and Endeavor
If PPO Library were a song, it would be a melody full of power and warmth. The lyrics of this melody would be: "Competing in beautiful dreams, striving hard every day." This is not just a simple lyric; it is a true reflection of PPO Library's brand spirit—driven by ideals and passion, even in the face of numerous challenges, still working tirelessly every day to achieve that beautiful vision of books and connection.
A Warm Embrace Spanning Sixteen Years: To My Ten-Years-Ago Self
A few months ago, a friend involved in theatre came to PPO Library looking for a book, but unexpectedly saw some meticulously crafted genuine leather embossed notebooks in the glass cabinet. She immediately recognized the stationery brand and said that her father had bought a similar one in Italy the year she was born. To commemorate this wonderful serendipity, this friend bought one that day. And the donor of these exquisite stationery items was precisely the book lover who had donated hundreds of literature, history, philosophy, and art books to "Read-Cycling" before leaving Hong Kong.
If she could say one thing to her ten-years-ago self, Cynthia would say: "You said if you could make it to five years, you'd give yourself a 'thumbs up.' Now, we're approaching our 16th anniversary. If I could, I'd give you a hug." This statement is not only an affirmation of past efforts but also a promise of continued warmth for the future.
A Bridge of Knowledge and Connection: The True Meaning of Books for Joy
PPO Library hopes that every friend who has visited PPO Library, and every friend who knows "Books for Joy," can feel joy through books. At the same time, besides containing knowledge, books can also build bridges of communication between people, bringing unexpected encounters and filling the present moment with warmth and connection.
